Establishing commercial markets on the moon is going to require thinking a little differently.

That’s DARPA’s hunch, anyway. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is the U.S. Department of Defense’s R&D arm, which has just selected 14 companies to participate in a study that is new develop technical frameworks for a lunar future.

“The next ten years can provide increase to a lunar that is thriving,” the agency said in a statement. “Getting there requires looking beyond the current technical paradigm of isolated, self-sufficient systems that must organically support all necessary resources — such as power and communications — and toward a framework that is future emphasizes incorporated different types of commercial task.”

The businesses selected for the 10-Year Lunar Architecture (LunA-10) Capability Study works collectively over a period that is seven-month design integrated, interoperable solutions for core lunar services like logistics, construction and communications. Crucially, the study will not fund surface that is lunar demonstrations or technology building — alternatively, think about the research once the analytic framework which will underpin all of that task down the road as time goes on.

The 14 businesses feature significant aerospace companies and smaller room startups. Redwire’s share will give attention to high-speed communications and PNT solutions, aided by the business noting that “A constellation of cislunar orbiting systems offering robust services and wide lunar protection may be a vital section of a thriving commercial lunar ecosystem* that is.”(
